“Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched him...”

-Mark 1:41a

Wellness Center Vision

I want to share the vision behind the name Hands That Hear so that you possess a deeper sense of its meaning and my passion for this field.  After all, you must wonder, hands cannot hear… or can they?

Why is it that when we have a child run to us with a scraped knee or bruise, our first innate sense is to touch the pain?  We don’t run to our loved ones when they are hurt and then stand at a distance to make sure they’re well.  We run to them and pick them up; we run to them and touch the pain.  What is it about touch and pain that is unmistakably interconnected?

Our bodies, each one fearfully and wonderfully made, all tell a story– a story we don’t even often recognize that’s being told– a story of pain, of joy, of heartache and healing.

PSALM 139:14

Massage & The Mind

The physical aspect of massage therapy and the psychological patterns of tension we hold in our bodies are divinely interwoven.  We all, unknowingly or knowingly, hold patterns of emotional and mental tension in our bodies that manifest themselves physically.

An incredible example of that fact is when looking at those with heart conditions– very often it is found that those with heart conditions have shortened upper chest muscles, which create their shoulders to draw in towards their heart, creating a hyperkyphosis in their upper back.

How remarkable is the design of our bodies– that our muscular patterns naturally follow our patterns of tension– even the tension within our organs?  And whether that tension is mental or emotional, the longer that pattern is held inside the longer it takes to correct it on the outside.

All this to say, I’ve learned our bodies speak a language far louder than words– in our muscular patterns, our movement patterns, even in the way we hold our shoulders when we walk– and it takes two open hands to truly hear that language and listen.

An Open Invitation

And it is with those two open hands that I warmly welcome you here.  My hope is that, together, as we learn more about the human body, we will stand in awe at the magnificence of the holy Designer, who calls our bodies temples of the Holy Spirit if we are His children.  What greater honor and responsibility is that?

The Artist of sun and sky makes His ultimate dwelling place and home within our earthly bodies.  We are His temple, designed wonderfully by Him to self-heal and grow and change.  We are encouraged to take care of that temple– for if it is overworked and stressed how can we be of service to Him and others?  When we are running on half-empty, how can we live fully?  Christ tells us in John 10:10 that He came not only to give us life, but to give it abundantly.

How do we expect to live an abundant life when we are not managing our stress well and are living in poor health?  If we are called to an abundant life in Christ, in all areas of our life, what has to change for us to be better pursuing that?  In light of this, I hope you make all spectrums of your health a priority; and, as you seek to live more holistically, I hope you choose massage therapy.

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore glorify God with your body.”
